HIFF Spring Showcase April 16-22

Two Oscar-nominated films, Ajami and The Most Dangerous Man in America, will be featured during the HIFF Spring Showcase.

AJAMI, a film from Israel, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and the MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN AMERICA was nominated for Best Documentary Film. (Oscar winners will be announced March 7.) The two other confirmed HIFF films, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGONTATTOO and A GOOD RAIN KNOWS, come from Sweden and South Korea.

Friends of pro surfer Pancho Sullivan are getting together to raise money for his adorable 4-month old baby daughter Kehau, who has been in and out of hospitals since she was born. They're hoping to raise $150,000 to cover costs, after insurance coverage, of the multiple open heart surgeries she needs to survive. Donate $10 to Red Cross for Haiti: Text "HAITI" to 90999

Text donations to the Red Cross to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake have topped $4 million, according to Verizon Wireless. Coming in at $10 increments at about $200,000 an hour, it's the largest outpouring of support via mobile devices in history.

Wyclef Jean's foundation Yele is also collecting $5 text donations. Text "yele" to 501501.

Feds will loosen longlining restrictions

The National Marine Fisheries Service announced new regulations to allow longline fishing boats to deploy more gear to catch swordfish. The change, which will take effect next month, increases the potential for bycatch including endangered Pacific leatherback turtles, loggerhead turtles, albatross, and dolphins, environmentalists say. Hawai�i seeks exemption from health care act

From NPR story: Hawaii wants out of the national health care overhaul because it already has one of the lowest uninsured rates in the country, thanks to its 35-year-old employer mandate system. Hawaii's congressional delegation inserted language into both House and Senate health carebills that provides explicit protection for the landmark Hawaii Prepaid Health Care Act of 1974. It's apparently the only state looking for such an exemption from major health care overhaul.

Plastic bottles are frequently named among the main perpetrators when it comes to eco-destructive products.
