LEMON DROP CRUNCH CAKE

I have discovered the best cake on the island. It is called the Lemon Drop Crunch Cake. And it is found at the most unlikely of places—The Alley at ‘Aiea Bowl. They serve a wide variety of ono kine grinds, from pizza to furikake salmon to a roasted portabello sandwich to a must-try tasty chicken, but the regulars know to always save room for dessert.

The Lemon Drop Crunch Cake is one of their signature five-layer cakes that has alternating layers of cake, a rich lemon curd, and cream. That’s the “lemon drop” part. The “crunch” part is the improbable yet perfect compliment of toffee bits that are dusted on top. The cake itself is light and delicate, not too spongy, and the crunch tastes like homemade graham cracker crust mixed with Almond Roca crumbs—whatever it is, it is divine. The generous slices (that is a dinner platter in the photo) are served with a dob of fresh whipped cream. I savored every bite—every time I took a bite, in fact, murmurs of delight came out of my mouth.

Also, while I was there on a Monday night, the chefs set up a table that gives you one more reason to try cosmic bowling. They make fresh handrolls, with choices like country shrimp, spicy tuna, California roll, or Spam—for $2 roll, or 3 for $5. I can think of no better value meal in town.—Catharine Lo
